The PE jaw crusher is the workhorse of primary crushing. It takes run-of-mine ore straight from the vibrating grizzly feeder and reduces oversize rock to a manageable size before it moves to secondary crushing. In most hard-rock circuits it is the first machine ore touches, so reliability and a generous feed opening matter more than fine sizing here.

How it works

Material drops into a V-shaped chamber formed by a fixed jaw plate and a moving jaw driven by an eccentric shaft and toggle. As the moving jaw advances, rock is compressed and fractured; as it retreats, the broken product falls toward the discharge. The closed-side setting (CSS) is adjusted with shims or a wedge to control product size.

Selection logic

Two numbers drive jaw crusher selection: maximum feed size and required throughput. As a rule of thumb, feed should not exceed about 80% of the gape. A PE-400×600, for example, accepts feed to roughly 340 mm; larger PE-900×1200 frames take feed near 750 mm and push higher tonnage. Xinhai sizes the frame, motor and CSS range to your ore hardness and target product, since abrasive ores such as quartz-bearing gold rock wear plates faster than softer limestone.

  • Primary reduction ahead of cone or impact crushing
  • Adjustable CSS for a controlled product top size
  • High-manganese jaw plates that reverse to double service life
  • Heavy flywheels to smooth load on the eccentric shaft

Wear parts and operating cost

The main wear items are the fixed and moving jaw plates and the cheek plates lining the chamber. Mn13Cr2 or Mn18 castings are standard; plate life depends on ore abrasiveness and feed rate. Keeping the chamber choke-fed and avoiding tramp metal protects the toggle, which is designed as a sacrificial safety link.

After primary reduction, product typically reports to a spring cone crusher for secondary or fine crushing, then to screening and grinding. Spring Cone Crusher | Secondary & Fine Crushing https://xinhai.xpyseo.com/products/spring-cone-crusher/ Wed, 17 Jun 2026 16:57:54 +0000 https://xinhai.xpyseo.com/products/spring-cone-crusher/ The role of the spring cone crusher

The spring cone crusher sits after primary crushing, taking product from a PE jaw crusher and reducing it to a finer, more uniform size ahead of screening and grinding. It is built for hard and abrasive ores where impact crushers would wear too quickly, and is a standard second or third stage in gold, copper and iron flowsheets.

How it works

Ore enters the top and is crushed in the gap between a gyrating mantle and a fixed concave (bowl liner). The mantle is mounted on an eccentric that traces a small circular path, so each point in the chamber alternately opens and closes, compressing rock until it passes through. The defining feature is the spring-cushioned bowl: if tramp metal or an uncrushable enters, the springs let the bowl lift, pass the obstruction, and reset, protecting the machine from damage.

Sizing and product control

Cone crusher capacity and product size are set by the closed-side setting and the chamber profile. Standard, medium and short-head chambers trade throughput for fineness: a coarse chamber maximizes tonnage, while a fine chamber produces a tighter product for grinding feed. As a rule of thumb, keep the reduction ratio per stage between roughly 3:1 and 6:1, and choke-feed the chamber so liners wear evenly and the product stays cubical.

  • Spring overload protection against tramp metal
  • Cubical product ideal as grinding-circuit feed
  • Standard / medium / short-head chambers for coarse-to-fine duty
  • Manganese mantle and concave for abrasive ore

Wear parts and operation

The mantle and concave are the primary wear items and are cast from high-manganese steel. Liner life depends on ore hardness, feed gradation and the setting; running the crusher fully choke-fed keeps wear uniform and avoids the ring bounce that comes with trickle feeding. Lubrication temperature and pressure should be monitored, as the bearing and bushing system carries high crushing forces.

For coarser product or higher throughput at a single stage, compare with the rest of our crushing machinery. Cone crusher product typically feeds a circular vibrating screen before grinding. To match a chamber and setting to your ore, contact our process team.
